Apex Out and About: Celebrating a Day of Design at the ASID-IL Design Summit
Last month, Phil Dedic, Cristina Ortega and I thoroughly enjoyed our day at the American Society of Interior Designers-Illinois Chapter Design Summit at The Merchandise Mart. It was wonderful to see so many of the interior designers we have partnered with over the years.
We shared our latest product news with them and discussed their current projects as well. What we’ve heard are all good things: homeowners are focusing on remodeling the key interior spaces that make the biggest impact on their lives; for example: kitchens, baths, family rooms and entertaining rooms.
So, which products in our booth did designers ask us about most?
Answer: Our large sample board of Hakwood’s Deep-Fumed European White Oak, which you’ll read more about below. We also had a lot of inquires about our Artisan European White Oak and the eco-friendly “Revival” flooring.

Hakwood
Midwesterners are becoming more attracted to the appeal of European Oak in their homes. We constantly travel “across the pond” to search for durable, beautiful, unique and affordable European Oak. Our latest trip to Holland was fantastic. We witnessed the coming-together of longstanding, trusted techniques with cutting-edge technology, and we are happy to introduce Hakwood Fumed European Oak hardwood flooring to you.
Why it’s Unique:
Traditional fuming or smoking of timber is an age-old process that imparts a deep, rich brown coloration throughout Oak. Naturally occurring tannins in Oak will darken during the fuming process, beautifully highlighting the quartered rays that are characteristic to the board edges of European plain-sawn Oak. Fumed Oak was historically used for old French millwork, early English country furniture and the Arts and Craft furniture characterized by Gustav Stickley’s desire to enhance but not obscure the grain of Oak.
Call us today to see samples of our European Fumed Oak. Our new collection is currently available in three levels of fuming, from a warm golden brown to the rich chocolate tones of deep fuming.
Happy Spring to you and yours!
